R&D WORKSHOP – WE DON’T HAVE A CAMPER VAN by Jana Milivojević

La Mousson d’été is thrilled to welcome Serbian playwright Jana Milivojević for a week-long residency in Paris! Throughout the week, Jana will collaborate closely with French translator Karine Samardzija and young French actors to preserve the essence of the play while also exploring new creative possibilities beyond spoken dialogue. Gérard Watkins, an experienced theatre director, lecturer, and playwright, will offer his keen dramaturgical insight, providing the author with fresh questions and perspectives to deepen the world of the play and expand its potential. As part of Mousson d’Hiver—a festival dedicated to young audiences—the residency will culminate in a public performance, bringing together spectators aged 15-18 from several towns in the Eastern Region of France. The ultimate goal is to engage a French audience with this Serbian play, evaluate how effectively its message transcends language, and promote cultural exchange. Following the performance, there will be a discussion with the author and translator, providing young spectators the opportunity to share their immediate impressions and reflections.

“I’m very satisfied with how everything went. It was quite meaningful for me to hear how the lives of young people in France (don’t) differ from ours, and to realize that, when it comes to dramatic texts for young audiences, the situation is quite similar—there simply aren’t many.
One part of the workshop that left a strong impression on me was the rehearsal sessions I had with just the director and the translator. I had the chance to closely observe the translation process, and also to explain to the director what inspired me to write about the themes I chose.
It was really special to hear my text in another language, and to receive feedback from the audience who attended the public reading!”
