R&D WORKSHOP – BLEACH ME by Nalini Vidoolah Mootoosamy

From June 9 to 13, 2025, La Mousson d’été hosted Italian playwright Nalini Vidoolah Mootoosamy for a week-long residency to develop her play Bleach Me. A play that explores themes of identity, race, and belonging, focusing on the complex realities of skin bleaching and mixed-race families.
Directed by Véronique Bellegarde and translated into French by Federica Martucci, the workshop featured actors Astrid Bayiha, Matisse Humbert, and Cindy Vincent. The residency took place at Cap Étoile in Montreuil (Greater Paris area) and concluded with a public presentation on June 13. A second presentation followed at the La Mousson d’été festival in Pont-à-Mousson, in eastern France.

“If I had to describe my time at La Mousson d’été in Paris in one word, it would be unique. Partly because of my deep connection to French, the language of my childhood. When I learned that ‘Bleach Me’ would be translated into French, I often imagined hearing it performed. And when it happened, it felt like home.
What also made this experience unique was the collaborative spirit. I spent a week immersed in respect and active listening, guided by director Véronique Bellegarde, who welcomed and involved me at every step. The actors were curious and committed, asking insightful questions and bringing the play to life with care.
There were powerful moments of connection that gave meaning to my writing and renewed my hope in humanity. I’m deeply grateful to the PLAYGROUND network for making this journey possible.”
