R&D WORKSHOP – IN BETWEEN by Mark Oltean
From 27 October to 2 November, Heartefact will host an R&D workshop on In Between, a new play-in-progress by Romanian writer Mark Oltean, with director–playwright Patrik Lazić, translator Robert Lenard and actors Andrija Marković, Amar Ćorović, Milan Zarić, Aleksandar Đinđić, and Dragana Varagić.
Oltean’s work engages socially charged themes, including climate change and LGBTQ+ identities. In Between will open on a flight, where Samuel, the 19-year-old son of a Catholic priest from Romania, meets Abe, a 19-year-old guest worker from Iran; as their connection deepens, a secret phone call will unsettle Abe, launching a story about faith, identity, and intimacy across borders.
The week will focus on table work and dynamic reading rehearsals, giving the playwright a first chance to hear the text performed, and will culminate in a public reading on Friday, 31 October, followed by guided feedback. By week’s end, Oltean will leave with layered input from the director, translator, actors, and audience, and a strengthened draft ready for next production steps in Serbia, Romania, and across Europe.
